Vincent (The Chin) Gigante-The Real-Life Godfather

Vincent Gigante, known as “The Chin,” was a prominent figure in the American Mafia from 1981 to 2005. He was known as “The Chin” because of his distinctive strong jawline. Many members of Cosa Nostra had nicknames.

Vincent was born on March 29, 1928, in New York City to a humble beginning. His parents made sure he had everything he needed. However, he still took to a life of crime at a young age.

He soon became affiliated with the Genovese family where he stayed until entering prison. Gigante rose to power as the boss of the Genovese crime family, leaving his mark on the history of organized crime. Research showed his net worth was around 600 million.

What made him more popular was his way of staying away from prosecution. He pretended he was mentally disturbed while walking the streets in a bathrobe and mumbling to himself. The media dubbed him as “The Oddfather.” Vincent stayed in control of the family behind the scenes.

All good things have to end, and it was the same for The Chin. In 1997, he was arrested for multiple crimes and was convicted and sent to prison for 12 years. His health suffered, and he passed away on December 19, 2005 at 77. The Genovese Family is still alive and well and lead by boss Liborio Salvatore Bellomo.
