Arnold Rothstein-The Brain
Arnold Rothstein was a notorious American businessman and gambler who became a prominent figure in organized crime during the early 20th century. He was thought to be the father of the mafia. Arnold was born on January 17, 1882, in New York City and grew up in a wealthy Jewish family.
Also, as known as "The Big Bankroll" and was involved in a wide variety of criminal activities, including bootlegging, extortion, and gambling. The Brain was particularly well-known for fixing the 1919 World Series, in which he allegedly paid members of the Chicago White Sox to intentionally lose games. This never happened because the media found out and the plan was interrupted.
He was also involved in the drug trade, investments in property and the theater. Despite his reputation as a criminal mastermind, the authorities did not convict him of any major crimes.
On November 4, 1928, Rothstein was shot and mortally wounded in a New York City hotel. Arnold welched on a gambling debt. He died the next day, and the identity of his killer remains a mystery to this day. Arnold would not rat out the assailant. His life and legacy have been the subject of many books, articles, and films, and he remains a popular figure in American popular culture.
The book, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, supposedly was written about Rothstein.
