Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, after its debut, sold over twenty-one million copies and was on the bestseller list for sixty-seven weeks. The movies made between four-hundred and five-hundred million dollars plus and won nine of twenty-eight Academy Award nominations.
So? What’s the big deal, why was and still is The Godfather so popular and one of the greatest films ever made? There are countless Facebook groups dedicated to the movie, with thousands of members worldwide. The members post their favorite scenes, quotes, pictures, and anything else related to the story.
Others have built shrines in their homes to The Godfather and its legacy. Now, why? We consider it a cinematic masterpiece because of the outstanding cast, cinematography and rich, totally amazing story. A story that captivated us, and I remember when I first saw it was over fifty years ago and I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.
The Godfather wasn’t only about gangsters; it was about family. The family who protected each other, from Don Corleone to Michael and the opening wedding scene, also portrayed the love and togetherness of the family. This is my opinion, you may see it another way.
Whatever reason you have for loving this great story is your truth and opinion. History shows two men, Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola, brought their talents together and made one of the most intriguing and loved stories of all time.
