“Wiseguy” is a non-fiction book written by Nicholas Pileggi, published in 1985. The book is based on the life of Henry Hill, a mobster who worked for the Lucchese crime family in New York City.
The book details Hill’s rise in the mob, his involvement in various criminal activities, and his eventual cooperation with the FBI. is two-hundred and sixty-three pages. I remember reading that Martin Scorsese was in the airport and needed something to read on the plane. He picked up the book and supposedly that is how it all began. Scorsese received an Academy Award for Best Director for in 1990.
The book goes into detail of the way organized crime operated in the 1980’s. There is much more information in the book than the movie allowed. How young Henry became involved in selling cigarettes and the downfall of that endeavor. Who had Tommy Desimone killed and why? It’s a great read and Nicholas Pileggi is a talented writer.
He has stories which came right from the actual characters you saw on screen. If you are into gangsters and you never read Wisely then you owe to yourself to read it. It is definitely a classic. We all know that Goodfellas was a classic and a hit movie. However, reading the book is an eye opener.
